Frontignan la Peyrade: decontamination of the former refinery
The site of the former Frontignan la Peyrade refinery, located close to the town center and the coast, is undergoing a major environmental rehabilitation operation. For more than 3 years, teams from Antea Group and Séché Eco Services will be working to clean up the soil, while taking into account the severe constraints imposed by the proximity of local residents. This 11-hectare site presents a number of technical challenges and requires innovative solutions. It will enable the town of Frontignan la Peyrade to reclaim land for the development of a new district, thus meeting its objective of zero net artificial development.
A site steeped in history
The Frontignan la Peyrade site operated for almost 70 years as an oil refinery. It has undergone several phases of expansion and modernization, but also landmark events such as the 1944 bombing that caused a fire and hydrocarbon leaks. In 2011, the refinery ceased operations and the site was gradually dismantled.
Today, the site covers 11 hectares and shows traces of pollution in the soil and groundwater. These hydrocarbon residues are a source of olfactory nuisance and may represent a health and environmental risk. The site is also subject to regulatory constraints linked to its geographical location, close to the coast, the Rhône à Sète canal and a Natura 2000 zone.

An ambitious rehabilitation project
In order to make the site compatible with future uses, a soil remediation operation was launched in 2023. The project owner is Frontignan Développement, the owner of the site. The prime contractor is Antea Group, an environmental engineering firm, which produced the design plan for the works and is supervising the site. The delegated project manager is Séché Eco Services, the Séché Environnement subsidiary specializing in industrial site rehabilitation, which is carrying out the work.
The aim of the project is to decontaminate the soil and groundwater, secure the site against pyrotechnic risks and backfill the excavations with clean or recycled materials. The project also aims to limit the environmental and social impacts of the worksite, notably by reducing odor emissions, noise nuisance, greenhouse gas emissions and the transportation of materials.
Innovative technical solutions
A mobile containment tent
Pour réaliser les travaux de terrassement tout en confinant les odeurs, une tente gonflable mobile de 50 x 120 mètres a été installée sur le site. Il s’agit de la plus grande tente de confinement jamais utilisée en France pour ce type de chantier. La tente permet de réaliser les opérations de terrassement sous confinement, en aspirant et en traitant l’air intérieur pour éviter les émanations d’odeurs. La tente est déplacée 17 fois sans être démontée afin de couvrir la majeure partie du terrain.
A water treatment unit
En raison de la présence de la nappe souterraine à partir de 2 mètres de profondeur, il est nécessaire de mettre en place un système de pompage dans les fouilles et d’acheminer les eaux pompées vers une unité de traitement également construite spécialement pour l’opération. L’unité de traitement des eaux permet de séparer les hydrocarbures des eaux et de les traiter par oxydation avancée. Les eaux traitées sont ensuite rejetées dans le canal du Rhône à Sète, après avoir respecté les normes de qualité.
A concrete crusher
Les bétons et blocs calcaires triés directement dans les fouilles ou criblés dans une deuxième tente de stockage sont dirigés vers un concasseur afin de pouvoir les réutiliser rapidement sur site. Le concasseur de béton permet de réduire les volumes de matériaux à évacuer et de valoriser les matériaux issus du site. Les bétons concassés servent à remblayer une partie des excavations en complément de matériaux propres provenant de carrières.
