Decarbonizing to protect the climate

Our climate strategy in 90 seconds!

Two key targets

Target n°1: Reduce emissions by 25% by 2030

In order to reduce the carbon footprint directly related to our activities, we have pledged to cut our direct greenhouse gas emissions by 13% by 2026 and 25% by 2030 (compared with 2020).

Direct emissions are those generated by the company, our activities and the energy we consume (industrial facilities, warehouses, offices, and vehicle fleets). We strive to make our industrial facilities a beacon for carbon footprint reduction.

To reach this target, we have identified around 60 actions to:

  • Improve the energy efficiency of our industrial facilities
  • Decarbonize our fleet of transport and logistics vehicles
  • Improve procedures to recover energy from waste
  • Increase biogas collection at our waste storage facilities

Target n°2: Increase the emissions avoided by our clients by 40%

To cut our clients’ carbon footprint, we aim to expand our high value-added recycling activities and increase the quantity of low-carbon energy produced and recovered by our waste recovery facilities.

These two actions will make it possible to increase the volume of avoided client emissions by more than 40% by 2025 and 50% by 2026. In 2023, the recovery of recyclable materials and the energy contained in the waste we treat enabled the Group to avoid emitting the equivalent of 391,700 tons of CO2. To put this into context, a town of nearly 30,000 inhabitants would generate a similar level of emissions.

An ambitious strategy

Our long-standing expertise in developing circular economy loops and producing low-carbon energy position us as key defenders of the climate and the environment.

To successfully navigate the transition toward a low-carbon model, we consistently seek to innovate and take action. We are driven by the ambition to constantly reduce our carbon footprint and that of our clients.

Our climate strategy, developed in collaboration with the leading independent consulting firm Carbone 4, is aligned with the Paris Agreement and the French national low-carbon strategy (SNBC). The strategy was also recognized by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi).

Our commitments in the financial markets

Our two climate targets form the non-financial criteria of the Group’s 1st Sustainability-Linked Bond with ESG criteria (Environment, Social, Governance). The bond was successfully issued in November 2021 with French and European green finance investors. Moreover, it rounds off our commitment in financial markets to decarbonization.

According to the European taxonomy, which aims to encourage investment in “green” activities”, 84,09% of our 2023 revenue is green. We set CO2 emission reduction targets separately for each of our facilities, and we monitor progress annually. This is one of the factors that qualify our activities for the taxonomy.

Our collective commitment to the climate

As efforts to protect the climate can only be effective if everyone plays their part, we work with leading organizations in France and around the world:

  • We joined the French Business Climate Pledge, which now covers over 300 major corporations in France. Created in 2015, ahead of COP 21 and supported by the leading network of entrepreneurs in France, MEDEF, the Pledge represents a voluntary commitment to the transition to a low-carbon economy.
“The success of our first ESG bond shows how major green finance investors recognize the credibility of our Group's ambitions to cut its own carbon footprint, as well as that of its clients.”
