Séché Environnement joins the French Business Climate Pledge

The Séché Environnement Group, a major player in the circular economy, is joining the French Business Climate Pledge. This initiative, led by the MEDEF (the leading network of entrepreneurs in France), aims to generate momentum across French industry by waging the climate battle together. The Group was already involved in this fight thanks to its efforts related to the production of low-carbon energy and resources from waste as well as its ability to eliminate large quantities of gas with high global-warming potential.

Ever since the COP21, the major conference on climate change held in Paris in 2015, large French companies have been committed, on the initiative of the MEDEF, to invest in renewable energiesenergy efficiency, and lowcarbon technologies. In total, these companies expected almost 60 billion euros of investments between 2016 and 2020. However, they had not counted on the powerful dynamics they had unleashed: for the 2017–2018 period alone, investments reached not 60 but 68 billion euros and the French Business Climate Pledge now includes more than 100 signatory companies.

Contributing to the collective dynamics

The Séché Environnement Group, which for nearly 40 years has set itself the task of improving the recycling and recovering of waste from human activities and reducing their environmental impact, has therefore decided to join this large movement in French industry.

We want to show that, to counter global warming, we have tools, we have solutions, we have results. But, faced with such a challenge, we need to combine our efforts and we invite every company to take part in this ecological transition. ”

Maxime Séché, Chief Executive Officer

Accelerating the ecological transition

Accelerating the ecological transition of its activities and that of its customers is now the Group’s priority. For that reason, Séché Environnement is constantly improving its waste recycling, recovering and disposal solutions in order to limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions:

  • recovering energy from waste (production of biogas, electricity, or low-carbon heat) not only makes it possible to use the GHGs naturally released by waste but also to produce energy by avoiding the use of fossil resources. We produced over 1,000 GWh last year;
  • eliminating gases with high global warming potential (GWP), particular gases used in air-conditioning systems, enabled us to prevent the emission of almost 3 million tCO2e, the equivalent of annual emissions from a city of 400,000 inhabitants;
  • recycling rare materials (bromine, zinc, nickel, etc.) as well as solvent regeneration makes it possible to respond to the depletion of natural and virgin resources using a circular economy approach.

Preserving biodiversity

Fighting against climate disruption contributes to the preservation of natural environments. And, vice versa, protecting ecosystems helps to conserve carbon sinks and to better adapt to the impacts of climate disruption. That is why our low-carbon actions are inseparable from our fight for biodiversity, particularly through the Act4Nature initiative led by the Ministry of the Ecological and Inclusive Transition.

On each industrial site, we are active on the ground, in partnership with the actors in each area to concretely implement the 10 principles of the United Nations Global Compact, to which we have been committed since 2003.
