Harnessing waste to produce energy

At our Sénerval facility, our team of 65 employees manage and operate the non-recyclable residual household waste-to-energy unit serving Strasbourg and the surrounding area.

We recover all the non-hazardous waste produced by nearly 500,000 residents from the Greater Strasbourg area.

Along our three production lines equipped with kilns, waste is incinerated to release the energy it contains, so it may be transformed into heat, steam and electricity for industrial and domestic usage across the region.

We handle:

  • household waste
  • industrial waste
  • large waste items

We also handle bottom ash, the residue left after waste is incinerated, so it may be reused in the base layer of roads. As such, we transform waste into new raw materials.

Treatment of residual waste: bottom ash platform

Here, we mature the bottom ash after having removed all the ferrous material. Following this process, it is reused to build roads, as base layer or as backfill.

We crush large waste items so they may be fed back into waste recovery flows.

Driving the environmental transition in the region

By releasing the energy contained in the waste produced by people living in and around Strasbourg, we avoid more than 20,000 tons of CO2 emissions each year. Sénerval represents a considerable asset in the fight against climate change.

Preserving the environment by monitoring discharge

The smoke released from the Sénerval chimney meets very strict environmental standards. Before being released, it undergoes a number of treatments to capture dust and the different pollutants generated when waste is incinerated. The composition of smoke is constantly monitored. Moreover, the water used by the factory undergoes preliminary treatment before it is sent to the Strasbourg wastewater treatment unit.

Both water and smoke are analyzed and measured, and the results are communicated with the regional environment service tasked with monitoring waste-to-energy units in the region.

Sénerval, the beating heart of the Port Autonome de Strasbourg

We are involved in local environmental synergy cooperatives (CLES) that bring together businesses based in the port of Strasbourg, focusing on three priorities: competitiveness, reduced environmental impact and local roots. As such, we support local initiatives to promote recruitment, training and environmental protection, for example by cleaning the banks of the Rhine alongside employees of companies operating out of the port.
